How to Install Exocad Implant Libraries

While exocad’s built-in Library Manager handles most library installations, knowing how to manually install implant libraries directly through File Explorer is an essential skill for any dental technician or lab team. Whether you received custom library files directly from a doctor or need to add specific components offline, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the manual installation process.

Step 1: Prepare Your Files and Close exocad

Before moving any files, complete two critical preparation steps:

Close exocad Completely: Ensure exocad software is completely closed so new library files load correctly upon launch.
Extract Compressed Files: If your library files arrived as a .zip archive, right-click the folder and select Extract All.

Pro Tip: Open two File Explorer windows side-by-side—one for your downloaded files and one for your destination directories—to easily drag and drop components.

Step 2: Navigate to the exocad Implant Directory

By default, exocad is installed on your primary system drive (C:). Navigate through the following folder path:

C:\Program Files\exocad\DentalCAD\3.3\DentalCADApp\library\implant

(Note: The 3.3 folder represents your software version, and your specific drive letter or folder hierarchy may vary depending on your reseller's setup.)

Step 3: Copy the Library Files

Open your extracted library folder.
Check for Nested Folders: Open the extracted folder first to make sure it doesn't contain another subfolder with the same name. Always copy the innermost folder that directly contains the .stl, .xml, or library files.
Drag or copy-paste (Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V) the library folder directly into the implant directory.

Step 4: Add to Model Creator (Optional)

If the implant library is intended for model design, you must also copy the extracted folder into the Model Creator directory:

  C:\Program Files\exocad\DentalCAD\3.3\DentalCADApp\library\modelcreator\implants

Paste the unzipped library folder into this destination as well.

Step 5: Verify in exocad

Launch exocad.
Open an implant design case.
Access the library drop-down menu during the component selection step.
Verify that the newly installed library and all associated components appear in the list.

If installed properly, your components will be ready to use immediately in your workflow!
